Dambulla's five painted cave shrines hold some of the best-preserved Buddhist murals and statues in Sri Lanka, carved into a granite outcrop that's been a place of worship for over two millennia. Afterward, a bullock-cart ride and a home-cooked lunch in a nearby village gives a quieter, rural counterpoint to Sigiriya's crowds.
